The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Chandigarh has ruled that a beauty salon in Kharar must pay a woman Rs 1 lakh in compensation for allegedly damaging her hair during a curling treatment.

Seema Sharma of Kharar claimed that on February 18, 2021, she visited Make Over Place, a beauty salon in Kharar, to have her hair curled. The salon assured her that they were experts in this field. Sharma had her hair curled and paid Rs 3,000 for the service, but she did not receive a receipt for the payment. Within a week, her curls had unraveled and her hair became rough. When she complained to the salon and requested that they fix the curls or improve the quality of her hair, they demanded Rs 3,000 for shampooing and an additional Rs 1,500 for a keratin treatment. When Sharma refused to pay, the salon started avoiding her.

On April 14, 2021, Sharma sought advice and treatment from a renowned skin specialist for the damage caused by the salon. According to the specialist, her hair had been significantly damaged by the curling treatment and would require a year to repair.

The beauty salon, Make Over Place, claimed that they did not provide any hair services, including curling, cutting, or shampooing. However, after examining the salon’s Facebook page, the commission concluded that the salon clearly indicated that it offered hair services. The commission noted that most of the photos displayed on the Facebook page were related to hair cutting and hair beautification. The salon’s claim contradicted the evidence presented, and they did not file an affidavit attested by a Notary Public or Oath Commissioner to support their statement.

Based on these findings, the commission ruled in favor of Sharma and ordered Make Over Place to pay her Rs 1 lakh in compensation for the hair damage caused by the curling treatment.
